Closer - The Unbearable Truth

Lying's the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off, but it's better if you do. – Alice, Closer

This is not quite a movie review though Closer is my all-time favorite. Watched it 3 years ago, I wrote in my old blog that "it tells you what real adult relationships are". Watched it again today, having rather the same comment (though I truly believe and witness there are a number of healthy faithful relationships in the reality) and thinking lots about *the truth*.

Dan said he knew it would hurt, then went on telling Alice that he had cheated on her. Alice asked how he could do this to her. He said/defended himself that "Deception is brutal. I am not pretending otherwise."
He left Alice for Anna. It worked for several months until she admitted that she had slept with her ex-husband, Larry. Dan asked why she told him the cruel truth, "What's so great about the truth? Try lying for a change, it's the currency of the world."
Anna left him and he went back to Alice (what a typical jerk and a typical stupid woman). He was so eager to know if Alice had a revenge fuck with Larry. Alice did not get why he was so obsessed with the truth. "Because without it, we're animals", said Dan. Alice ended the conversation/ relationship that "I don't want to lie. I can't tell the truth. So it's over. "

When he wants to know the answer, he digs in for the truth. When the truth happens to be something devastating, he prefers a lie. When he hurts another by telling her the truth, he says it is better than deception.

Does the so-called truth really matter? If it's gonna hurt you, would you prefer lies to that?
Are lies to certain extent euphemism*? If we agree that euphemism does make life easier, why don’t lies?

Is intimacy a lie we tell ourselves? Is truth a game you play to win?

*A good illustration of euphemism
Larry: Is he a good fuck?
Anna: Don't do this.
Larry: Just answer the question! Is he good?
Anna: Yes.
Larry: Better than me?
Anna: Different.
Larry: Better?
Anna: Gentler.
